Silicone or Saline: Which Implants Are Best?
Posted on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 by The Plastic Surgery Center
Patients often ask us about silicone vs. saline breast implants. There is a lot of literature and evidence about them and basically what they amount to is that silicone implants look and feel slightly more natural than saline implants. Still, many surgeons feel that saline implants are safer, especially due to risk of capsular contracture, which is more common with silicone implants and occurs when breast tissue grows on the implant, contracting it and giving it a hard look and feel. Saline implants also make breast surveillance for cancer less troublesome. Overall, both implants are safe and offer improved appearance.
To our patients at the Plastic Surgery Center struggling with which implant to go with, our New Jersey Plastic Surgeons offer the analogy of driving an SUV vs. a compact car. While they both are great automobiles, an SUV is safer than a compact car, and a compact car handles better than an SUV. The decision lies with which car best meets the consumer’s circumstances and needs. The same can be said for patients deciding whether they should get silicone or saline implants. We advise patients to talk to their physicians about their situations and concerns to ensure they receive appropriate and individualized care.
